Week 2 of the 2019 American Patchwork Quilting Quilt Along starts on 2 25 The assignment is Cut 1 1 2 wide strips Below you ll find some helpful tips for cutting fabrics for this quilt and some answers to questions we ve been getting Fold the long strip in half matching the short ends right sides together Sew along the long edges skimming the knife I guided the fabric along the right edge of the presser foot It s ok to sew fast Finger press the seam allowances toward the squares When you get close to the end cut the fabric on the fold
To reduce the bulk in the across way seams start and finish the cover strip 1 2 away from the top and bottom of the seam Iron in place Machine sew down both side edges of the cover strip stitching close to the edge Back tack or reverse stitch at the very top and bottom edges of the seam not on the cover strip Sew them together in this order teal background gray background teal We will cut out two triangles from this later but first let s prepare the fabric for the other 8 triangles Take three strips of teal and two strips of background fabric and sew them together Repeat this once more with the remaining strips

In the basic 1600 quilt you sew all the 2 1 2 strips short ends together into a long strip Then you fold the strip in half align the short ends and sew the two strip halves together to make a strip half as long and twice as wide I finally finished piecing the top for my Sew Many Strips quilt It was a long project since it is all made with 1 1 2 strips and the quilt finishes at 86 X 102 The top is heavy with all those seams My normal colors of choice are purple and turquoise but I had a lot of Bonnie and Camille fabric and decided to use them minus the navy
